I've lived in Northern California for 13 or 14 years now and I believe one thing, we, as a state, might not be known for is our hospitality and kindness. People tend to be rushed, on the rude side when stressed or busy and not so neighborly. I even had a neighbor call the police because I was parked in front of his house (on the street) during a quick lunch break. Wow! So to get that out of the way, I have to say that I had the honor to live in the beautiful state of Hawai'i for 2 years recently and got to see how caring people are there. Even with strangers. People older than you get called "auntie" and "uncle." Very sweet. I think some old fashioned ideas like opening doors, asking neighbors if they want or need help, is going to make your life a little better and when you actually give someone attention, they will light up because it's very unexpected these days! So...trying to be a good example of what I recommend, l was inspired to offer to pay for a family's bus fare. It seemed to be a grandmother, daughter and her children. I felt 100% glad to pay, it was not a burden and I had some extra cash on me. It was a pure joy to offer this. They were a little caught off by the offer but not only were they smiling and waving to me as they exited the bus AND the bus driver was very moved and pleased to have that happening on his bus! This kind of stuff spreads to unknown places and I just love it! I'm going to keep this up and hopefully I will have more and more lovely stories to share in the future.
